What is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is used in all jaw movements and is commonly referred to as the jaw joint. Patients with TMJ disorders (TMD) may suffer from limited jaw movement and/or orofacial pain in the joint and muscle area.
Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:
- Pain or tenderness of your jaw
- Aching pain in and around your ear
- Difficulty chewing
- Aching facial pain
- Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
- Uncomfortable bite
- Reduced mouth opening
Studies have shown that stretching combined with therapeutic motion are effective ways to improve jaw mobility. Therapeutic motion nourishes the joint without activating painful muscles.
What are the symptoms of TMJ Disorders and are there treatment options?
Our lower jaw supports important muscles, joints and teeth vital for chewing, speaking, swallowing and making facial impressions. Any restrictions in our jaw motion may jeopardize these functions. Limited or absent joint movement may lead to inflammation, causing the joint to stiffen and gradually lose functionality. Possible causes for limited jaw movement are for example facial trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, jaw clenching and fibromyalgia.
Training with the TheraBite System provides both stretching and therapeutic motion.
What is Trismus?
Trismus (mandibular hypomobility) is a condition that refers to any restriction in opening the mouth, or in jaw mobility. It is a severe, yet frequently overlooked, disability. Patients often suffer chronic pain and have difficulty with day-to-day functions, such as biting, chewing, oral hygiene, and speech..
Trismus can be caused by:
- Radiation therapy to the head and neck
- Surgery involving the head and neck
- Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD)
- Systemic diseases, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma
- Direct trauma to the head and neck
- Indirect trauma, e.g. whiplash
- Facial burns
- Stress-induced disorders, e.g. clenching and grinding of the teeth (bruxism)
- Congenital (at birth) or hereditary diseases
What are the symptom of Trismus and are there treatment options?

Atos Medical AB manufactures the TheraBite® Jaw Motion Rehabilitation System™. It is a portable system specifically designed to treat trismus and mandibular hypomobility.
What is the TheraBite System and what is it used for?
The TheraBite Jaw Motion Rehabilitation System is a manually operated, intermittent passive motion system indicated for persons with restricted jaw motion or pain in the joint and/or muscles of mastication (chewing). A key aspect of the TheraBite system is that it follows normal jaw movement.
Why is TheraBite system more effective than conventional therapies?
While most conventional therapies rely on stretching to increase jaw mobility, the TheraBite system focuses not only stretching (in comfortable and anatomically correct manner), but also on passive motion to strengthen muscle and mobilize joints.
Is there any way I can make the Bite Pads stick better, or last longer?
Make sure that the mouthpiece surface is completely dry before applying the Bite Pads. As pressure and warmth increase the Bite Pads’ adhesion to mouthpieces, you can use your thumb to press and “massage” the Bite Pads when they are correctly positioned on the mouthpieces. Another tip is to leave the Bite Pads on the mouthpieces overnight before starting to use the device (the longer the Bite Pads stay on before use, the greater their adhesion strength).
How often should I change my Bite Pads?
Bite should last around 6 weeks. Placing the device under running water, or cleaning it, does not affect adhesion of the Bite Pads.

The purpose of this policy is to set forth the Atos Medical Inc. (“Atos”) policy for providing adequate notice of the Uses and Disclosures of Private Information that may be made by Atos; and of Patient’ rights and Atos’s legal duties with respect to Private Information.
II GENERAL POLICY STATEMENT
- Atos will issue a Notice of Information Privacy Practices to all Patients at the Patient’s first service encounter. In emergency treatment situations, Atos will issue the notice as soon as possible after the emergency. The Notice will be issued within 60 days of a material revision to the Notice. In addition, at least every three years, Atos will notify patients of the availability of the Notice and how to obtain it.
- In its Notice of Information Privacy Practices, Atos will describe the manner in which it will Use and Disclose Private Information as necessary to provide treatment to its Patients. Specifically, Atos will Use and Disclose Private Information where necessary to carry out all of the functions which the Privacy Rule deems to be related to Treatment, obtaining Payment for services rendered, and maintaining Atos’s administrative, financial, quality assurance and other Healthcare Operations. Atos’s Notice also describes its Patient’s rights with respect to information privacy, as well as the circumstances under which an authorization must be obtained for Use and Disclosure of their Private Information. Additionally, the Notice describes how the Atos will Use and Disclose Private Information to persons involved in Patient’s care or payment for such care or coverage, and in other permissible circumstances, absent an authorization, such as to governmental oversight bodies – each as described in Atos’s Notice of Information Privacy Practices.
- Atos’s Notice will describe its information privacy practices to its Patient’s in an understandable form.
- Atos will post its Notice prominently on the Atos internet site. It also will make the Notice available to any person who may request a current copy. Finally, in accordance with the Privacy Rules, Atos will redistribute its Notice, as necessary, and in the event of a substantial change to information privacy practices so as to necessitate change in the substantive content of its Notice.
- Atos will, from time to time, adopt policies and procedures establishing the appropriate Use or Disclosure of Private Information in the context of a particular function undertaken on behalf of its Patients. These policies and procedures will be consistent with the categories of Uses and Disclosures set forth in the Notice of Information Privacy Practices. The Privacy Officer will maintain such policies and procedures and provide for the education of Employees.

This Policy is applicable to all Atos Workforce members within the United States and all systems containing American PHI and ePHI.
IV DOCUMENT RETENTION
Atos shall maintain this Policy and all notices and documentation created and/or sent, including all communications in writing or by electronic copy as a result of this Policy, for at least six years from the date of its creation or the date when it was last in effect, whichever is later, in accordance with HIPAA Policy – Maintaining Appropriate Documentation.
V PERIODIC REVIEW
- This Policy will be reviewed on a periodic basis.
- More frequent reviews may be set by the Privacy Officer or as may be required by law.
- The Privacy Officer should prepare revisions, retirements, and new policies as required, based on such periodic reviews.
