Course Description:
This course delves into the upper airway's vital roles in secretion management, humidification, and filtration. For patients with tracheostomy tubes, these functions are bypassed, leading to unique challenges. The use of Heat and Moisture Exchangers (HMEs) and filters to enhance pulmonary function and patient outcomes will be explored.
Course objectives:
Explain the roles of humidification, filtration, and mucus production in the upper airway
State how a tracheostomy negatively impacts pulmonary health
Explain various options for restoring humidification and filtration for patients with tracheostomy
