Course description:
This presentation provides an overview of pediatric tracheostomy, discussing current indications and how these indications may evolve throughout the pediatric lifespan. Participants will explore the developmental impact of tracheostomy on swallowing, communication, speech and language development, and motor skills. Evidence-based strategies and clinical interventions aimed at supporting development and minimizing potential impacts will be discussed.
Course objectives:
- Describe how a tracheostomy impacts the upper aerodigestive system
- Explain how a speaking valve can affect voice and swallowing in a patient with a tracheostomy
- List two clinical benefits of HMEs
