Course description:
Restoring upper airway airflow is a critical step in swallowing recovery after tracheostomy. This presentation explores how airflow disruption affects swallowing and highlights the importance of early assessment and intervention. Strategies to restore airflow, including cuff deflation, speaking valve use, and subglottic suction tracheostomy tubes, will be discussed.
Course objectives:
- Explain how disruption of upper airway airflow after tracheostomy affects swallowing, voice, cough, and secretion management
- Describe early assessment and intervention strategies, including cuff deflation, speaking valve use, and above-cuff vocalization to support swallowing
- Evaluate evidence supporting the use of subglottic suction tracheostomy tubes to facilitate above-cuff vocalization, support swallowing rehabilitation, and minimize the risk of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia
