Course description:

A tracheostomy can have detrimental effects on developmental milestones. This presentation will equip healthcare providers with strategies to help mitigate these impacts, such as the use of heat and moisture exchangers (HMEs) and speaking valves. With appropriate intervention, children with tracheostomies may improve their ability to reach key developmental milestones.

Course objectives:

  • Name two indications for pediatric tracheostomy
  • Describe how a tracheostomy can negatively impact developmental milestones
  • Explain how a speaking valve can help improve speech in a patient with tracheostomy
