Course description:

This course will review the criteria for tracheostomy decannulation including airway patency, effective swallowing, cough, and secretion management. The integral role of the speech-language pathologist in facilitating readiness for decannulation will be emphasized. Practical and evidence-based strategies, along with a multidisciplinary team approach will be discussed.

Course objectives:

  • Explain physiologic changes following tracheostomy
  • State common criteria for decannulation
  • Describe the role of the SLP in facilitating readiness for decannulation
