Course Description:

For speech-language pathologists in the medical setting, an understanding of tracheostomy is essential. This course will review anatomy and physiology of the upper aerodigestive system, physiologic changes following tracheostomy, and tracheostomy tube types and components. Teamwork, appropriate cuff management techniques, use of HMEs, and speaking valves will be emphasized.

Course objectives:

  • List two indications for a tracheotomy
  • State three physiologic changes following tracheostomy
  • Name 3 components of a standard tracheostomy tube
