Provox Electrolarynx

An electrolarynx (EL), or artificial larynx (AL), is an electronic device that generates sound, that you then use to create meaningful speech using your lips, teeth, tongue, and jaw.

On this page you will find everything you need about Provox electrolarynx devices, including:

  • Provox EL device options
  • CareTips Sheets and Videos
  • EL Virtual Events
  • Device troubleshooting

Why might I need an EL?

You may choose to use an EL as your primary way of communicating after surgery, as a backup option, or a temporary means of communication. Many people begin using it right after surgery before they have healed enough to begin using tracheoesophageal (TE) and/or esophageal speech.

How does an EL work?

An EL can be used on your neck or with an oral adapter in your mouth. Sound from the EL device creates sound used for speech. When sound moves into your mouth, you can form that sound into words using your lips, teeth, and tongue. There are two primary ways the EL can be used:

Neck placement – The sound travels through your neck tissue into your mouth. If you recently had surgery and you’re experiencing swelling, or stiffness from radiation therapy, work with a Speech Pathologist to find optimal placement.

Oral adapter – When you place the oral adaptor tube in your mouth, and press the power button, the vibrations travel through the tube and into your mouth.

    TUNE IN: EL Knowledge

    Boost your electrolarynx (EL) knowledge

Why should you learn how to use an EL? Whether you rely on an EL as your primary means of communication, or you need a backup to your voice prosthesis, learning how to effectively use your EL will help set you up for long-term success. We invite you to our monthly EL focused meetings that are designed to help you get the most out of your EL. These informal, loosely-structured discussions may include:

    • Review of your EL features
    • How to properly tune and setup your device
    • Finding your "sweet spot" for both neck and intraoral placement
    • How to use the variable pitch feature found in Provox TruTone Plus and EMOTE ELs

Open discussion: As much time as needed to answer your questions and work through your concerns!

These monthly events are a chance for EL users and those who are interested in ELs as a backup means of communication to interact with each other, learn valuable tips, share experiences and learn from the Atos Electrolarynx Specialist.
